West Side
What should I plant on the west side of my house that has morning shade and afternoon sun?
I live in the Chicagoland area (zone 6) and am having trouble getting anything but marigolds to survive at the back of my house, which is the west side. I get morning shade and around 3 hrs. of afternoon hot sun. What bushes, trees, vines and flowers can I grow there? Help!
I wouldn't think you'd have a problem with much of anything....unless the soil isn't so great (?). How about day lilies, Hostas, ground cover like Myrtle (with little purple flowers), Mums (those will grow into huge bushes), Tiger lilies, most any perennial I would say. I love Russian Sage (gorgeous billowing arms of tiny lavender flowers and Buddleia trees..attract butterflies and have fuschia cone shaped flowers.
As with anything: learn how to care for and when to prune back plants at end of their season.
For annuals: anything colorful that you'd like to try. In autumn plant tulip and daffodil bulbs.
Water your plants with Miracle Grow...it really does make a difference, keep the soil covered with mulch. If you decide to put pots out there or hanging baskets from shepherd's hooks, make sure they get watered twice a day. Water plants before 10 am is best and in evening after sun subsides (in other words, whenever the heat of the day won't evaporate it).
I'm in NYS so we have it cold here, too, so I know "lack of sunshine" problem...:D. A good idea is to consult your local nursery to see what trees and shrubs work well for your area....bring in pictures and dimensions so they can help you design your landscaping.
BTW: perennials are hardier than annuals (like the marigolds)...they can withstand the winter and come back every year in the spring. Here's a little something to read:the "How to Guide for Perennials and Annuals">>>
