Why are some English prejudiced against the Scots?
I'm from the US, but I recently posted a question asking what the Brits thought of Gordon Brown. One poster complained that there were too many Scots in power! I don't really understand that attitude. After all, the United Kingdom doesn't just consist of England! Not only that, but it's not as if the UK hasn't had non-English PMs before. (David Lloyd George and Tony Blair are good examples.)
As a Scot that is a very easy one to answer Tangerine. It's all to do with the media if you ask me. Here in Scotland we don't have our own independent TV news service, so when it comes to news reporting in international affairs, it is all filtered through England, so we get an English point of view on world affairs, whilst uniquely still having our own viewpoint on what is happening.
Sadly in England they don't seem to have much of a clue about Scottish affairs as it is seldom mentioned on the "National" news. A lot of English who make the sort of comments you describe still appear to think Scots hate England, i've even heard a lot of people saying they want to rebuild Hadrian's Wall (in which case we can make that the Border then, which means England will lose territory).
Still more complain about the number of people claiming unemployment benefit down there in Engerland, overlooking the fact just as many English claim this here, plus we have a lot of English students coming to Scotland to take benefit from the better deal we have here in Scotland regarding tuition fees.
Those people were moaning when they imposed Margaret Thatcher on Scotland (hardly anybody in Scotland voted for her, she got into power through English votes) & she used us a "guinea pig" for all of her controversial & unwelcome taxes, such as the "Poll Tax", which nobody in England gave a damn about until they tried to introduce it there.
In short, it's all to do with ignorance & a certain amount of envy that in Scotland we have our own parliament now. The solution to that is clear. English people should vote for their own parliament like we did in Scotland. I know lots of people in Scotland support that idea. The central government in Westminster can be kept soley for affairs that affect us all in the UK such as defence etc.
