Any theatre vets - How to have a successful audition for local theater?
I just found out that my local civic theatre is doing my all-time favorite musical - "The Sound of Music" in September. Auditions are in July and I desperately want to be cast. What are some things I can do to help prepare. We have to have a 30 second monologue and about 16 bars of a song prepared. I've heard that you shouldn't do anything from the play/movie. Any suggestions or tips would be quite welcome.
Each situation is different. It would help to practice your monologue and song in front of someone who has theatre experience: a drama teacher, acting coach, etc. Get some objective input on how to improve your pieces. If you have readings from the script, try to bring your own interpretation to the lines. As hard as it may be, do NOT copy the performances of the actors in the movie.
Be pleasant, confident, and focused at your audition. Breathe and take your time. You can be friendly with the others trying out, but don't waste your time laughing and talking with them.
Again, getting a little coaching from a pro will help you relax and still be the most "sparkling" version of yourself onstage. Break a leg!
