Why is restoration theatre important?
What is the significance of restoration theatre, and what is the background behind it?
After Charles II was restored to the throne of England in 1660, he took over from the Puritans who had been ruling since Charles I was executed. The Puritans were anti-theatre, and so when Charles was restored (and he restored the theatres) theatre was able to take up issues and make commentary that it hadn't been able to do during the interregnum (the between-kings-time). Restoration comedy in particular was more bawdy and adventurous than any theatre England had seen in a while. It set the stage, so to speak, for later melodrama and well-made plays.
