Theater District
The theater district in Boston is a theatrical hotspot that is home to several theatres including the Colonial Theater and the Boston Opera House. The theaters that are housed in this area vary in nature; some are very traditional and feature a rich tradition of history, while others are more modern in nature. For those who which to catch an outstanding performance of a range of different musical shows, this location should not be missed.
This prominent and artistic area is bordered by Chinatown and is located in the heart of Boston. Visitors to this area can indulge themselves in a variety of plays that include performances from both local and national comedy and drama acts.
One of the most notable theater’s in the area is the Colonial theatre which opened in 1900 with a production of Ben Hur. Since then the venue has always been busy and has been home to numerous different plays that showcase a variety of talent from the local region. The theater features a beautiful interior that is full of atmosphere and charm. Despite its traditional outlook it still features a range of modern amenities that are sure to please guests.
Another top class theater in the area is the Boston Opera House. This theater opened in 1928 and has over time been host to numerous different events. Unlike the Colonial Theatre which endured the harsh times hurled its way during both World Wars and the depression. It was during this period that the original building was demolished. The Opera House of today is a new construction that was built to host films and vaudeville shows.
Disaster struck this fine venue once again during a flood in 1991. However this tragedy was the spark that was needed to rekindle interest in this venue and a campaign to restore the hall back to its former glory was undertaken and today the Opera House is once again back to its former glory and hosts a variety of shows.
